The finest hiking trip

During our hiking holiday on Madeira's east side, our local guides will take you to steep rocky coasts, magnificent peaks, charming bays and lush green vegetation. This is how you get to know Madeira's nature and the diversity of the endemic flora. We try the culinary highlights in typical pubs and taste the specialties of the island. Enjoy fantastic views of the sea and stroll through Funchal's city center. Our boutique hotel is located in the heart of Funchal.

The process of your hiking vacation:

Day 1: Bem Vindo á Madeira

We pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel in Funchal. In the evening you get to know your guide and the other fellow hikers.

Day 2: Botanical Garden and Funchal

We visit Madeira's botanical garden and enjoy the wonderful view of the bay of Funchal. Over 2,000 endemic and imported species are combined in the garden. Afterwards, the city tour takes you through the picturesque alleys of the old town, to the market hall and to the Se Cathedral. In the market hall you can taste the tropical fruits of the island, get to know the Portuguese coffee culture with sweet queijadas and where you can find the best sandwich with carne de vinho e alhos. After the Madeira wine tasting, the afternoon is at your leisure.

Day 3: geology, history and whales

Today you will learn more about the creation of the island of Madeira. Barren volcanic landscape and shimmering tuff and basalt rock await you on the hike to the Eastern Cape tip. There is a variety of volcanic rocks and endemic plants to explore. Strengthen yourself with fish and seafood fresh from the Atlantic and a glass of Vinho Verde before you learn more about the history of whaling and the impressive marine mammals in the whale museum.

Day 4: The trout levada

Our smaller hike takes you to the Balcoes viewpoint, where you can enjoy the view of the central mountain range. In the small snack bar Flor da Selva you can start with the first hand made souvenirs such as liqueurs, honey or homemade Madeira hats. Then we continue along the trout levada. Endemic plants such as Madeira mahogany, the Madeira blueberry, orchids, laurel trees and exotic deciduous trees such as pedunculate oak and maple-leaved plantans line the path. A feast awaits you as a reward. At the end of the day you visit a farmers market.

Day 5: The old way of the winegrowers

We hike the superlative coastal path that offers us spectacular views of Porto Santo and the cliffs. At the end of the tour, we can take a dip in the seawater swimming pool in Porto da Cruz or visit one of the few sugar cane factories still in operation. We taste the poncha - the national drink of the Madeirans. The tour guide will then take you to one of their favorite restaurants.

Day 6: Madeira's summit hike

The hiking trail from Madeira's third highest peak, the Pico Arieiro, first leads along a paved path to a narrow mountain ridge. The highest peaks rise in front of you: Pico das Torres, Pico do Gato and Pico Grande, until you finally arrive at Pico Ruivo. Unforgettable impressions are guaranteed on this Madeira hike. Then visit the Casas de Colmo and reward yourself with a feast.

Day 7: At leisure

Enjoy the atmosphere in Funchal. Take the cable car to Monte and the basket sled down again. A ride on the Tukxi to Camara de Lobos is an experience. We give you lots of ideas on how to spend your day off.

Day 8: Adeus Madeira

It's time to say goodbye today. We take you to the airport or to your extension hotel.

Small group tour: minimum 8, maximum 16 participants

The composition of our groups is usually mixed. Solo travelers and couples, older and younger hikers - all have the same goal: the joy of nature, the joy of experiencing together and the interest in the country and its people. Our certified, German-speaking tour guides aim to bring Madeira closer to you. A joint information meeting, lots of tips and information for the group about the travel destination and also what you can do together in the evening after our hiking tours and excursions.

If the minimum number of participants is not reached, Picotours has the right to withdraw from the trip up to 28 days before the start of the trip. You will of course be refunded any down payments already made. If this happens, we will usually inform you by email much earlier in order to find a solution together with you on how we can realize your desired trip to your satisfaction (from 2 people).
